Meta has announced the launch of Anjana, the first transatlantic submarine cable system entirely owned by the company, connecting Myrtle Beach (South Carolina, United States) with the capital of Cantabria, Santander.
With a capacity of nearly 500 Terabits per second (Tbps), Anjana will be the highest-capacity cable system in the world. It consists of a 7,121 km cable connecting Europe and the United States with 24 fiber pairs. Each fiber pair thus has a design capacity of approximately 20 Tbps, 200 times more capacity than the transatlantic cables of the 2000s.
Likewise, Google Cloud announced this Wednesday its second submarine cable that will connect Spain with the United States, the Bermuda Islands, and the Azores, also from Santander, called Sol.
The cable will be manufactured in the USA and then laid across the Atlantic seabed using special vessels. Google will rely on the Spanish digital infrastructure company Telxius, owned by Telefónica, for connectivity on the Spanish side.
